Andover was granted a Royal Charter in 1175 and this, confirmed and added to by Henry II's son and grandson, gave Andover the status of town and borough. A fire in 1435 destroyed nearly every building apart from the church and the priory. Today, one of the few buildings that survives from that time is part of the Angel Inn at the top of the Upper High Street.
